A useful window estimate starts with your home's needs, rather than a single price per window. This guide helps Southeast Michigan homeowners prepare for an evaluation and compare proposals.
Room-by-room window inventory
Copy these prompts into your notes for each room before your estimate. Count openings rather than individual panes, and leave exact sizing to the installer.
- Room and opening
- Identify the room, wall and number of windows so you can discuss the same opening in every proposal.
- What you notice
- Note drafts, fogging between panes, difficult operation or visible frame damage. Add a photo from inside and outside where safely accessible.
- Your priority
- List what matters most: comfort, ventilation, easier cleaning, appearance or operation. Mark which openings you want evaluated first.
- Finishes to preserve
- Photograph interior trim, paint or stain, exterior siding and nearby details. Note blinds or shades you hope to reuse so their fit can be discussed.
Example note: Upstairs bedroom, two openings; one is difficult to open; ventilation is the priority; ask whether the existing stained trim and blinds can stay. This is an example to copy, not a diagnosis or a project recommendation.
Compare more than the glass
Ask about frame material, style, glass options, hardware and how each choice fits the opening. Ask the installer to explain the product's performance ratings in plain language. Energy savings depend on the home and the complete installation; a product alone cannot guarantee a particular utility-bill reduction.
Understand the installation scope

- Will the existing frame remain, or will the full opening be addressed?
- What interior trim and exterior finishing are included?
- How will water management, insulation and sealing be handled?
- Who removes the old windows and cleans up?
- How are concealed damage and additional repairs approved?
Replace in phases or all at once?
Phasing can help fit a project into your budget. Replacing all windows together can make it easier to coordinate style and scheduling. Compare both approaches against the condition of the windows and your priorities.
Compare written proposals using the same scope
For each item below, write the answer from each contractor beside it. Mark anything missing as “needs clarification” before comparing totals.
- Openings: Which rooms and how many windows are included? Are any openings excluded or priced as options?
- Product: What manufacturer, product line, frame material, style, glass package, color and hardware are specified?
- Installation: Is each opening an insert or full-frame installation? What sealing, insulation and water-management work is included?
- Finishing: Who supplies and finishes interior trim and exterior capping or trim? Does the price include painting or staining?
- Removal and cleanup: Are disposal of old windows, protection of work areas and cleanup included?
- Allowances and changes: What is excluded? How will concealed damage be documented, priced and approved before additional work?
- Schedule and payment: What are the current ordering and installation expectations, payment milestones and steps if timing changes?
- Written coverage: Compare product and installation terms, exclusions, claim procedures and any transfer conditions. Ask for the terms for the specific package quoted.
A lower total may reflect different products or less finishing work. Resolve those differences in writing so you can compare the project you actually want.
Before your estimate appointment
- Have your room-by-room list, photos and priorities ready.
- Identify access obstacles, furniture, window treatments and pets so the team can explain preparation requirements.
- Ask which measurements or condition checks are needed before an order can be finalized.
- Discuss replacing priority rooms first versus completing all openings together.
- Ask how operation, locks and cleanup will be reviewed at completion and whom to contact with questions afterward.
